Contenido

Armed conflicts are still an omnipresent phenomenon in the 21st century. The law of armed conflict, also known as International Humanitarian Law (IHL), is the main and oldest body of public international law that regulates the conduct of parties involved in an armed conflict. Most recently, the ongoing war in Ukraine has reintroduced IHL to the center of the world’s attention. Over the years, other branches of public international law have become more central to the discourse around armed conflict. These include International Criminal Law (ICL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL). In this course, we will explore the development of public international law pertaining to armed conflict from IHL to ICL and IHRL. We will learn about the structure, sources, and institutions of public international law and examine the intersection, overlap, and tension between IHL, ICL and IHRL. We will study the main elements of IHL, and explore the application of ICL and IHRL to situations of armed conflict. Our study will examine relevant contemporary cases including Ukraine, Palestine, and Colombia.
